Listening to you, caring for you.
Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans is now Ascension DePaul Services.

Our Story

Ascension DePaul Services of New Orleans (ADSNO) mirrors the work of our founders, the Daughters of Charity, who was founded by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac in Paris France in 1633. The Daughters began their health ministry in New Orleans in 1834 at Charity Hospital. For centuries, the Daughters have focused their service toward the most vulnerable population, touching the lives of many through health care, education and social and pastoral ministires throughout the world.

They later founded Hotel Dieu Hospital in 1959. Hotel Dieu was the only private hospital that remained open during the Civil War. The Daughters of Charity managed the hospital until the sale of Hotel Dieu Hospital to the State of Louisiana in 1992. This marked the beginning of a new approach to health services – a focus on primary care and prevention.

The transition from a hospital to a community health ministry fostered development of Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans (DCSNO). Following destruction of the Carrollton health care center by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, DCSNO, which became Ascension DePaul Services New Orleans (ADSNO) in 2019, has focused on expanding sites and services to provide much needed health care to greater New Orleans residents with continued focus on the poor and vulnerable. With 10 community health centers, operating as DePaul Community Health Centers, ADSNO has been able to provide health care and health education throughout the community through affordable services that are uniquely designed for everyone in the community through its comprehensive patient-centered medical home model of care.

The Foundation was organized to meet the piority needs of ADSNO. The Foundation is the private fundraising arm of the organization soliciting support from the philanthropic community to support all facets of health care within the scope of the ADSNO health care continuum. Private support for the Foundation comes from individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations in the form of cash, securities, gifts-in-kind, trusts, bequests and annuities.
